Turquoise and It’s Amazing History!
Turquoise is one of the oldest stones on Earth! It was discovered and mined in Egypt around 6000 BC. It has also been cherished and used in jewelry for thousands of years. The Egyptians would bury fine pieces with mummies, the Aztecs used it in their masks, the Native Americans today produce beautiful pieces like silver belt buckles, rings and bracelets. Tibetan turquoise is mined in the Himalayas and has almost the perfect balance of blue/green color! It is very unique in it’s patterns and is highly sought after. Tibetan Villagers use it to decorate their homes, musical instruments and bells. I am sure most of you have been fortunate enough to see a unique piece of this stone over the years!

The color depends on the amount of iron or copper that it contains. Higher amounts of iron bring greens and yellows to the turquoise and copper brings blue shades. One of the most valuable and rare types of turquoise is known as Sleeping Beauty. The gorgeous shade of “Robin’s Egg” blue makes this turquoise memorable. This turquoise got it’s name from the mountain it was mined in which is said to resemble a sleeping woman lying on her back with her arms crossed. The mine is located in Arizona and has been closed down for years, making the stone rare as the rough becomes harder to find on the market.
